Electrospun PHBV nanofiber containing Tea Tree Oil: physicochemical and antimicrobial activity

Aiming to produce an antimicrobial dressing for wound healing applications, in this work Tea Tree oil (TTO) was incorporated into PHBV nanofibers by absorption. It observed increase the nanofiber diameter due 5% TTO absorption efficiency, which also led a 54% decrease contact angle. The releasing assay indicates 6.8% release first 24 h – being probably deposited at polymer surface followed minimal 48 h. set of assays performed suggests incorporation optimized activity E. coli and C. albicans, while against S. aureus no significant difference observed. MTT showed cytotoxicity PHBV, but incubation L929 fibroblast cells with PHBV-TTO reduced cell viability. Overall, containing present great potential as dressing.
